How Many Days in Chitwan? 1 to 4 Nights Compared

Short answer: two nights. That's enough for a jeep safari, a canoe ride, a jungle walk and the Tharu village without rushing. If wildlife is the main reason you're coming, and tigers in particular, three or four nights is better. Here's what each length of stay gives you.

One night: the highlights in 24 hours

Arrive in Sauraha by midday, walk round the Tharu village in the afternoon and watch the sun go down over the Rapti. The next morning you're out early for a canoe ride and a walk back through the forest, followed by a half-day jeep safari, and you leave after lunch.

It works, and it's far better than not coming at all, but it's busy, and you only see the park once. Our 1 night 2 days package starts from $95 per person with all meals.

Two nights: the sweet spot

With a second night you see the park three ways: from a jeep, from a canoe and on foot. There's time for the elephant breeding centre, an early bird-watching walk and a lazy afternoon by the pool between safaris, which matters more than you'd think in the hot months.

This is what most of our guests choose, and it's the trip our 2 nights 3 days package is built around, from $165 per person.

Three nights: for wildlife lovers

A third night lets you swap the half-day jeep safari for a full day. The full-day safari reaches the park's remote lakes and grasslands, where tigers, gaur and sloth bears are most often seen. Our 3 nights 4 days wildlife package adds the gharial breeding centre at Kasara and a dawn of bird watching or a visit to Bis Hazari Tal, the Twenty Thousand Lakes, from $245 per person.

Four nights or more: a slow safari

Four nights gives you all of the above at an easier pace, with room for a village cycling tour, a Tharu cooking class and a free afternoon. You could also swap one lodge night for a night in the jungle tower. Our 4 nights 5 days package starts from $320 per person.

If tigers are the goal, think about spending some of those nights in Meghauli, in wild west Chitwan, where the grasslands are some of the best tiger habitat in Nepal. Even then, nobody can promise a sighting: tigers turn up on only a small share of safaris.

What changes the answer

  • Travel time: Chitwan is 5–6 hours by car from Kathmandu, or a 25-minute flight to Bharatpur. If you come by road, most of your first day is the journey. See how to reach Chitwan.
  • Season: in July and August some park areas and jungle walks may be closed, so an extra night gives you room to move things around. From February to May sightings are at their best. Read more on the best time to visit.
  • Children: younger children enjoy shorter outings with rests in between, so two or three nights at an easy pace beats one rushed night.
  • Where you stay: Sauraha is ideal for a short trip because everything is within walking distance, while Patihani and Meghauli reward longer stays. Our where to stay guide explains the differences.
